What is Reflux?
Reflux occurs when the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach opens up at the wrong time, allowing the contents of the stomach to splash up into the esophagus. When these acidic stomach juices come in contact with the sensitive lining of the esophagus, a burning sensation ("heartburn") is usually experienced. Eventually, exposure of the esophagus to acid will result in damage and the possibility of a variety of associated complications.
