Henderson-Goergen Education Scholarship Fund
Educating, equipping and supporting our healthcare professionals
Why support the Henderson-Goergen Education Scholarship Fund?
You can help Downey Regional Medical Center respond to the healthcare needs in our community by supporting clinical education and training through the Henderson-Goergen Education Fund.

Henderson-Goergen Education Fund scholarships are awarded to employees pursuing patient care education and training in accredited medical programs. They must also personify the characteristics of the two nurses for whom the grants are named: Willie Mae Henderson, R.N., former director of Nursing, and Minnie Goergen, former supervisor of Obstetrics at DRMC, then known as Downey Community Hospital. Upon their retirement in 1975, a scholarship fund was established to carry on their legacy as caring and professional nursing pioneers.

Educating, equipping and supporting our healthcare professionals
Why support the Henderson-Goergen Education Scholarship Fund?
- A nationwide shortage of medical professionals. Severe shortages exist for nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, X-ray technicians, medical record specialists and medical assistants. California recently became the only state to mandate nurse staffing ratios, which has added to the state’s need for more nurses. Many experts refer to this shortage as “an impending public health disaster.”
- Advances in Medicine. Downey Regional Medical Center’s caregivers use knowledge and skills unheard of just a few short years ago. Exciting developments continue to emerge. Real change, however, doesn’t occur through whiz-bang technology alone. It happens by changing clinical processes and educating staff.
- Every eight seconds a baby boomer turns 50. We are serving a growing community in which more people are living longer. As people age, they need treatment for more complex, chronic health problems.
