The other four 4-week blocks will be on inpatient medicine service including critical care and medicine. Call while on wards is every 14 days (usually on the weekends). As a resident, you will function as the “M6.” This means that you are on the medicine team to assist in rounds, admissions, teaching and function in supervising the interns and students.

Internal Medicine (Selectives): Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Hematology/Oncology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Infectious Disease, Allergy, Psychiatry, OMT

Selectives: Dermatology, Urology, Sports Medicine, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology or Family Practice

Surgery:

As an intern, the surgery rotations will be in house on the surgery service. Your primary responsibility is to round on your patients, maintain the list of patients on the service and assist in surgeries. There are opportunities to assist on cases in general surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, neurosurgery and urology. Call while on Surgery is usually q 5-6 days as an intern.

As a resident, you will have one 4-week rotation as the surgery M-6. This includes assisting the interns on the surgery service and also participating in surgical procedures and endoscopies. Additional surgical selectives for R2 and R3’s include ENT, ophthalmology, Orthopedics or Urology.

OB/Gyn:

Our obstetrics and gynecology experience is mostly in the outpatient clinics. As an intern, you will assist the OB on deliveries and C-Sections when they are on call. Call as an intern is usually every 5-6 days.

Pediatrics:

Our pediatric training is split between Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach and the outpatient clinic. During your internship and 2nd year you will be required to do a 4 –week rotation at Millers each year. Your additional rotations are in the outpatient clinics. Call as an intern is usually every 5-6 days while on out-patient pediatrics. Call during inpatient peds is at Millers and follows their residents’ rotation schedule.

Continuity Clinic:

Our continuity clinics are dispersed throughout the area. Our model provides for a one-to-one teaching experience at the preceptors’ clinics. There are opportunities to learn patient care, practice management and work with a diverse patient population. Many of our clinics also provide opportunities for the use of OMM.

Osteopathic Manipulation:

Our program provides significant OMT training in outpatient and inpatient care. The OMT clinic in the hospital is staffed by the residents and provides free OMT to any hospital employee. This is a great opportunity to increase your OMT skills and showcase our training to the nurses, administrators and other hospital personnel.

Avalon (Rural):

The Avalon rotation can be done during your 3rd year or at the end of your 2nd year of residency. The hospital is located on Catalina Island . Housing is provided during your rotation. Responsibilities include outpatient clinic during the day and on call for the ED at night. Workdays are Wednesday through Saturday and transportation is provided to and from the island each week.
